Doctor, educator to be honored

Mary Dorothy Lyndon is one of two women being inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement’s Hall of Fame. The annual ceremony, held at Wesleyan College in Macon, will feature Cathy Cox, dean and professor of law at Mercer University, as the keynote speaker. Also being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year is Dr. Leila Alice Daughtry Denmark, the Georgia pediatrician who conducted early research on the pertussis vaccine during the epidemic in the 1930s.

The Liberty County Convention & Visitors Bureau (LCCVB) is pleased to announce the selection of Liberty County native, Susie King Taylor, to be added to the Georgia Women of Achievement Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is scheduled for March 7, 2018, at Pierce Chapel on the Wesleyan College campus in Macon, Georgia.

Pioneering Savannah teacher Susie King Taylor’s undertold story comes full circle

The day is just beginning at Susie King Taylor Community School. Parents lead their little ones — some with hearts painted on their cheeks, others sporting pink and red ribbons woven in their braids for Valentine’s Day — through the heavy front doors of the 112-year-old red brick building on the corner of Bull and 34th streets.

Georgia Women of Achievement is seeking nominations for 2017 induction into the state’s hall of fame for important female Georgians.

Basic criteria is that a nominee must have been deceased for at least five years, and have done their primary work or contribution to Georgia’s history within the state. They must be significant at the regional, state or national level, not just locally.

If you visited Sapelo Island from 1920 until 1968, you may have seen a strong, lean woman briskly walking from one end of the island to the other, a long seven-mile stretch, her mind set on delivering another baby into this world. Born into a family of freed slaves in 1884, Katie Hall Underwood was the last of a long line of Sapelo midwives. Her skilled hands and soothing demeanor brought generations of proud Gullah-Geechee people into the world.
